About
NBR is an independent type foundry founded in Paris by Bastien Sozeau in 2019.
We create typefaces with care, curiosity, and a focus on usability. Our catalogue includes both retail and open source typefaces, each built to offer designers reliable tools with a strong sense of character.
Our work started well before the foundry officially launched. Since 2013, we’ve been releasing free and open-source typefaces, first through the graphic design studio Uplaod. These early projects taught us a lot about what makes type useful, versatile, and, most importantly, fun to work with.
Today, we continue to design new retail typefaces while also developing open-source families. Want to play with them before committing? Check out Typebox, our online playground where you can test, mix, and see every font in action.
We also welcome custom projects—whether it’s a full typeface, a logotype, a tailored typographic system, or an adjustment to one of our existing fonts. We enjoy working closely with designers, studios, and publishers to find the right typographic solution. You can see how others use our work on NBR Type in Use, a selection of projects from around the world that feature our fonts.
At the heart of the foundry is The NBR Standard, the shared foundation behind all our typefaces. Every font in the catalogue follows consistent global metrics and includes a complete set of OpenType features, such as ligatures, stylistic sets, fractions, alternative figures, and case-sensitive forms.
All NBR fonts also share a unified glyphset, supporting 360+ languages and a wide range of symbols—making our families dependable, inclusive, and ready for global use.
To keep licensing simple, all our retail fonts come with a single license that covers every format: print, web, app, and more. Students and schools receive a 60% discount on the entire retail library. Our open-source fonts are released under the SIL Open Font License and remain free to use.
If you have a project in mind or want to ask a question, we’re always happy to hear from you.
