About DualBright

DualBright was originally created for my dearest friend, the stone carver Jean-Gabriel Franchini, as a typeface capable of meeting the specific demands of engraved lettering. Its foundation is a variable axis that shifts fluidly between sans-serif precision and serif refinement, giving him the ability to calibrate tone, character, and expressiveness directly within the font. This makes it well suited for the full spectrum of memorial work, from modern minimalist headstones to solemn, classical epitaphs requiring more ornamental detail.

During the drawing process, the project naturally grew beyond its initial crafting-for-stone purpose and expanded into a fully featured digital font family. DualBright includes Color, Plain, Outline, and Stencil styles, each supporting the same serif-to-sans variability. The Colored style uses layered color formats and gradient transitions to add depth and a subtle sense of materiality—evoking polished stone, light falloff, or dimensional carving when used on screen. The Plain style preserves maximum clarity and stability for both carving and everyday display, while Outline distills the forms to their essential skeletons, making it ideal for engraving layouts or lightweight graphic applications. Meanwhile, the Stencil style functions as an inverted counterpart to the Outline—flipping positive and negative space to create a bold, cut-away appearance rather than relying on traditional bridges.

From etched stone to illuminated interfaces, it provides fine control over detail, structure, and style. What began as a custom tool for a single artisan has grown into a versatile family that honors traditional craftsmanship while embracing contemporary visual expression. Whether in stone or pixels, DualBright shows that letters can carve a path and sometimes, just sometimes, a little fun.
